Her grandfather, her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer and farmer, was the very first Roberts who settled in Atlanta. She inherited her father's interest in theatre from an early stage. He was an actor on at the Emory University campus in 1952 and in other productions around Atlanta. He joined the Air Force in 1953. During his time being stationed at Biloxi Mississippi, he appeared in a military production that included Betty Lou Bredemus who was part of the air force. The couple got married in the year 1955. Their first daughter, Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. Walter along with his wife resigned from the Air Force in 1957, and they both enrolled Walter as a student at Tulane University. Walter worked for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1960, the family relocated from the city of Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 on the children's local Saturday morning television program Bum Bum and His Buddies and their Buddies, which they themselves funded. In the following year, they established the Actors and Writers Workshop which was in operation for six years. They were joined by Lelisa Billingsley (also referred to as Lisa) and Julia (also also known as Julie) at the time.
